A Physical Sign

I wanted to share why I decided to get baptized. I was baptized…or I guess “sprinkled”…when I was 2 months old. I never really thought about my baptism, having gone to churches with infant baptism until I was about 13. Even then, I knew that it did not guarantee my salvation, and it didn’t mean I wasn’t truly saved. It never really bothered me.

About a year and a half ago God removed some major idols from my life (and still is) and I went through a really hard time. Shortly after that the message of the Gospel finally clicked. I realized that I was a sinner and so undeserving of God’s grace and mercy. I knew that by Christ’s death I was made perfect in God’s eyes. I decided to commit my life to Christ. A few months ago I had began to think about getting rebaptized as a way to share my newfound faith in God. After encouragement by friends and family and through prayer, I decided to be baptized at the church picnic.

One verse that really stands out to me is Galatians 3:27, “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” To me this paints a picture of literally wearing Christ and our lives being defined by Him. Baptism is a physical sign of taking off my filthy clothes and putting on Christ. God calls us to be baptized as an act of obedience. Though I know it is not necessary for my salvation, I was baptized to show how Christ has been working in my life.
