A Story from Kenya

MaasaiWarriorCLYou’ve seen this place before, whether you’ve been there or not. The Kenyan Serengeti is no stranger to the Discovery Channel. And let’s be honest: we are no stranger to our televisions...

We arrived in the Maasai Mara exhausted, but eager to meet the warriors and ladies. Some of us were curious about the new surroundings, however, they took no more than 10 minutes to become a reality. First and foremost, a monkey attempted theft of my granola bar when I wasn’t paying attention. Then, we are told that the lions hunt early in the morning (I don’t recall the last time a pride of lions have been the cause of my waking up AT 3 am?). Leopards hide in the trees. We are in the middle of the Kenyan Serengeti, surrounded by untamed, roaming wildlife. Your T.V. will inform you of this place, but experience serves a reality check as you unpack your luggage here: you are in the wild. The sounds are sharper. The smells are more distinct. And dare you look into the night sky, it would take your breath away. As silver and cream paint the Milky Way, countless stars that Abraham must have seen peer back at everything under the sun...

This speaks worlds about the spiritual reality surrounding us. Or maybe the spiritual reality that we just watch from our proverbial televisions! Some of us know of spiritual warfare, because we were taught. We know of an enemy that prowls like a roaring lion. We know of active, warring angels. But some of us know this as we know wildlife from a travel magazine or the HD screen. We know of spiritual reality as we know good information, but to awaken to the truth of its presence around us and our relevance in it? As we unpack what lies at the heart of our motives, relationships, and community, we find a truth that lies deeper than what we know; it is the spiritual war we live in. And yet, the greatest part of this reality is the vision above, of endless power, beauty and majesty that leaves us breathlessly awe-stricken and full: a Father whose omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence surpasses everything under the sun.

Pray, Give, Go
Kenya is a regional and continental hub for missions, theological education, and church ministry, yet there are still unreached people and tribal struggles. View a Kenya Prayer Guide here.
