Since working for Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM) I have witnessed the Lord do some amazing things. Allow me to tell you about the life-changing power of our awesome God. Almost a year ago, Detric Golden, Neighborhood Director at Greenlaw Community Center told all the kids in devo “If anybody wants to give their life to Christ, come see me in my office.” A young man named Detroy was really moved by this challenge and knew he needed Christ. He struggled with the idea of going to tell Golden that he needed Christ so he talked himself out of it and started walking out of the community center. He barely took two steps outside before realizing he couldn’t take another step without Christ. So he went back inside to tell Golden, and today he is glad he did.

It was around this time that I was praying that God would give me a disciple, someone I could build and pour my life into. God honored that request!

Then, there is Vincent, we call him “Detroit”. Detroy and Vincent played on the basketball team I coached. One of the requirements is that they attend our Bible Study. My mentor, BC suggested that I use the Bible study as a recruiting pool for potential disciples to emerge. Vincent never missed a Bible study. It seems like he always had questions and came with a teachable heart. Looking back, it is obvious to see that God was at work in his life.

One night we took a bus load of kids to see Greenlaw’s favorite gospel rapper, Fro. At the conclusion Fro pleaded with the kids to give their lives to Christ. He asked that all the counselors come up front and for anyone who wanted to give their life to Christ to go see a counselor. I happened to be one of those counselors. I really didn’t know what to expect, but then I noticed Detroy and Vincent walking toward me. I’ll never forget it! That night I had the privilege of leading Vincent to faith in Christ.

I get the unique opportunity to disciple these two young men and I can tell you first hand that they passionately love Jesus Christ and are radically committed to fulfilling His Great Commission.
