How to Help Hanley Elementary

Fellowship Memphis is excited to begin serving Hanley Elementary in the Orange Mound community. As with our Kingsbury High School partnership, we have learned there are often short-term and long-term needs. For Hanley, there is an immediate need for volunteers to help students with reading and math. Currently there are 18 2nd graders who can’t read and 90 3rd-5th graders who are below proficiency.
In partnership with Memphis Leadership Foundation, we are seeking to launch multiple volunteers into Hanley next week. Hanley needs volunteers to come throughout the school day to show flash cards to students, at breakfast (7:50-8:15am) lunch (10:45am-12:45pm) and after school (3:15-6:00pm: starts November 1st). Also, Hanley asked for volunteers to come during classroom time to work with smaller ratios.
Volunteers can sign up for a specific time slot and work with multiple/ different students or can be paired with specific students to walk closely and relationally. There are many long-term ways to contribute (adopting a classroom, helping with Bible study, teacher encouragement, etc.); however, the urgent need is to provide tutors to gain reading and math proficiency.
