My God Story

I love reading the testimonies in the church bulletin every Sunday. Everyone has a God story, and it is amazing to read what God is doing in the lives of our brothers and sisters in Christ.

I have been tempted to submit a story such as the blessing of serving as a teacher in the children’s ministry, or why my Community Group is the best group EVER. Yet, I have a story I cannot hold in any longer and through which I must proclaim the richness of God’s glory and my thankfulness for His work in my life.

2011 was a year I saw God carry our family closely in the arms of His people. Our younger son, Joseph, was born in August 2010. When he was one week old, we were given the devastating news that he was deaf. We faced great sorrow to know our baby could not hear our lullabies and “I love yous.” However, God lined up so many people and organizations to help us make choices for Joseph’s life. The prayers and encouragement from God’s people showed us we are not alone.

At two months old, Joseph became a student at the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf. I continued to pray for Joseph’s healing and that God would give us a miracle: He did! In September 2011, Joseph had a six-hour surgery to receive cochlear implants. In October, the external processors were turned on and our baby heard for the first time! His “ears” are now nearly three months old and it is beautiful to see our son turn when he hears us talk, laugh at Daddy’s funny sounds, or find a best friend in his older brother Jacob.

Two other wonderful blessings came from this situation. The first was how God showed His love, grace, and faithfulness through those around us. We received support from our friends and Fellowship and recognize that God is in control. We know God has a big story for each member of the Wright family as we walk Joseph through his challenges and our own. The second blessing is how I realized that no matter how important I thought it was for Joseph to hear, even more important is the miracle of his someday salvation. Being able to hear has changed Joseph’s life, but to have Jesus will forever change his soul. I pray that miracle for my children and countless others. My faith is strengthened, and my desire to point others to Christ’s love and salvation has grown exponentially. Glory be to God!
