Pitching Tents

My parents loved folks from the street. That compassion led us to a church that was passionate about engaging that community. We’d pitch a large tent (literally) on a street corner and have worship in the worst neighborhoods imaginable. Their method was consistent. After morning prayer walks they’d introduce themselves to neighbors, inviting them to worship. Afternoons we’d set up tables packed with donated clothing and food for the needy. That night they’d share the gospel under the big tent. I was only a youngster in those days. But I can still remember the testimonies of teary-eyed prostitutes, drug addicts, and the like as they came to saving faith in Jesus Christ. My parents loved the folks that no one else was loving and it’s those unforgettable experiences that have compelled me to continue that legacy.

Downtowners see many of our city’s hurting homeless daily. We’ve partnered with the Memphis Union Mission and this year we’ve served over 2,000 meals. On Monday, May 23, from 3pm to 8pm, Fellowship is sponsoring their Annual Crusade. We’ll be at the Mission: cooking, serving, and praying for the hurting in our city. Over 700 meals will be served and prayerfully many will come to saving faith in Christ. We’re calling on 100 volunteers to help as a Cook, a Prayer Counselor, or a Food Server. If you and your family can serve, email us at to sign up and get more information. See ya under the tent!
