I moved to Memphis in the fall of 2009 to begin not only my first year at college, but to have my heart completely broken for orphans and engage in an intimate relationship with Christ. I learned that there were over 147 million orphans in the world, and that this was not just another statistic. Each number was an innocent face of a child. I prayed that God would open an opportunity for me to travel to Africa, and God led me to volunteer for orphanage for two months in Uganda this past summer.
To say my heart was shattered would be an understatement. He showed me how much I need Jesus, and how materialism is worthless. I will never forget watching innocent children in prisons, praising the Lord. Watching them completely surrender to the Lord and the joy that radiated from their faces was unforgettable. Each of their faces is etched into my heart. He challenged me to turn everything over to him, including my future job and spouse. He showed me why his greatest commandment is to love. Every time I looked into a child’s face, I saw Jesus. Love never fails. It is always and forever unfailing, and it does not need words.
Now, my heart desperately wants to be in Uganda, but I know that the Lord is using this time to continue to prune me and to trust in His will. I am so thankful that my Savior is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He has a life planned for me greater than I ever could imagine. My heart will never be the same, but I am so blessed that God has rescued me.
I am trying to find a new normal, while fiercely pursing Christ, and watching God create a beautiful mosaic out of my shattered heart. He is manifesting my heart into a new rhythm with pieces that will always remain missing and new ones that He will add. Father God has continued to write a beautiful story for me, and reminds me daily that life is all about Him and less about me. I am forever in debt for His selfless gift of sending His perfect son to die for me and so humbled that He adopted me as His daughter into His forever family.
