Here is an update from Joel for May 1st...

Greetings Everyone!

This is a very exciting time to be at Kingsbury High School! Our practice Gateway scores suggest that we have made huge progress this year. Now, we need to appropriate our final hours to ensure that what we did in practice we will do in the game. Translation: we need as many pumped up tutors/volunteers/mentors as we can get at KHS this week and Saturday.

This Week during the School Day: Our tutoring sessions during the week are coming to a close, but our level of instruction and expectation for the students is at an all-time high. We need YOU to minimize the teacher/student ratio and maximize the power of individualized instruction. Come Tu-Fri, 2:15-2:45 pm. If these times don't work for you - no problem! We have a large number of students who are up at the school until 5 pm Tu-Thurs working on "Course Recovery." They need help completing their lessons, and, in some cases, completing requirements to graduate. If you are available from 3 - 5 pm, we would love to employ you with these students!

This Saturday: Because we are expecting at least 70 students on Saturday, and we want EVERY student to pass, we are extending our Saturday tutoring times. This Saturday we will be tutoring in the library from 9 am - 12:30 pm. Our entire Math staff will be on hand to accommodate the large number of students (and help those of us who do not know how to find the "discriminate").

Be a part of the GATEWAY: The Gateway exams are May 6-9. We need "a few good....PROCTORS!" A proctor is a test official that observes students taking the test. In other words, we need YOU to pace a room during testing and report any irregularities. If you are available on a day (or multiple days) May 6-9, from 7:45-9:45 am, we would love to have you! Please respond for more details.

Thank YOU FM!: After tutoring on Saturday, starting at 1 pm in the library we will have a reception for all of our Fellowship Memphis volunteers - that means YOU! We want to reach out to you and express our gratitude for the countless ways many of you have given of yourselves. There are some of you who will receive this email who have maybe only been to tutoring or a school event one time. Some of you have been here every week. There are also others who may have been just as consistent (or sporadic) in prayer for us. In all of these cases, we hugely value your support and want to say "thank you!" We want to show you what has been happening this year at KHS with your help. Please come and celebrate an extraordinary year with us on Saturday at 1 pm.

If you have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out and contact me! See you this week!

Tutoring Application: (click here for the application), and contact Joel Harris.

Mentor: Time is winding down and seniors are wrapping up their high school graduation requirements. Some seniors need some help in this because they are lacking a passing grade on a state test, they need to make up credits or difficult circumstances in their lives make graduation seem like a distant, perhaps unreachable goal. KHS is looking for adult mentors who can help these individuals reach their goals. Those interested in mentoring can complete an application (click here for the application), and contact Joel Harris.

T-Shirts: If you ordered a t-shirt from KHS, it has arrived! KHS is selling t-shirts in order to benefit the "Water for Africa" project. T-shirts can be ordered for $20. Donations for the project are also accepted. If you would like to purchase a t-shirt, donate to the project or get more information please contact Joel Harris.

Thanks and go Falcons!!!

"Black History - Make History." was a big success ...here is more about it and how you could get involved.

Students are focused on two goals:

  1. raising money to build a well in Africa with Blood:Water Mission
  2. promoting the KHS Peace March to be held on 4/08/2008.

This is a very unique and ambitious project for the school, and the students need all the community support they can get! Here are ways that volunteers can support the initiatives:

  1. Order a T-Shirt for $20 (see below for design) - e-mail Joel the size(s) you want
  2. Attend the program on 2/29/08 @ 1:20 pm
  3. Take the "2-week Sacrifice" - see Blood:Water Mission website or find out about it on Friday at the program
  4. Take part in the March on 4/08/08 - details to follow
  5. Make a donation for the well-project

State Testing Update: This week Kingsbury students completed the TCAP Writing Assessment. Attendance for the event was at least 97% which is two percentage points higher than the 95% state target. The Writing Assessment tests students' persuasive writing abilities, and is calculated into the school's overall English proficiency score.

Senior Sponsors: With the fourth 6 week grading period nearly complete, Graduation is practically here! There are a number of seniors that I meet with on a regular basis that need help meeting not only their graduation requirements but also in paying their senior dues. If you are interested in working with a senior to a) make sure the student is coming to school, b) offer to help with homework or the senior project, and/or c) help finance the senior dues, please contact Joel Harris.
